So Gary, in your opinion, what are the golden rules of betting to make a profit?

Gary Jay:

1. The only way to profit from backing horses is to be disciplined, play only those races on which you have a definite opinion and never chase your losses.

2. The biggest certainty is that tomorrow will arrive and we have another chance.

3. You also need to recognise that at certain times of the year, funny things are going to happen. April and October can be seriously funky, as the National Hunt season winds down and the flat boys start to get theirs ready for the summer.

4. Think about taking your holidays in the spring and autumn!

5. Never punt "odds on" in juvenile races, novice events or maidens. Such bets are the fastest way to the poor house.

6. Always be aware of how much you can afford to lose and punt sensibly.

NORMAN THE GREAT is undoubtedly, one of the most disappointing and frustrating novices in Alan King's high profile yard. He made a very encouraging hurdles debut last season when beaten 6 lengths by Nicky Henderson's Binocular. Considering that one's current position in the Champion Hurdle betting, it is clear to see why Norman The Great has far superior form to his rivals here. He failed to progress in three subsequent outings last season and quite frankly, his attitude to the game has to be questioned. However, he did turn in another top-class performance when reappearing at Acot two weeks ago, battling all the way to the line behind highly-rated Leo's Lucky Star. A reproduction of that form would make him a formality here and despite the question over his consistency, he is clear top-rated and must be backed!
